Africa has always been a marginal player in trade of goods and services at all level ranging from within countries, regionally, continentally and globally. Total trade from Africa to the rest of the world averaged $760,463 million in the period 2015–2017. In contrast, it was $4,109,131 million from Europe, $5,139,649 million from America and $6,801,474 million from Asia in 2017. Intra-trade between African countries in 2017 was 16,6% compared to 68.1% in Europe, 59.4% in Asia, 55.0% in America. There are eight regional economic communities in Africa, yet the share of intra-African trade remains low, at around 14.8 per cent in 2017.
