WEGE COMPANY is a social enterprise that advocates for the green economy in Burundi through a circular economy. It transforms banana waste; paper scraps, and rice straw waste into affordable, reusable, recyclable, and 100% eco-friendly materials which serve as practical alternatives to plastic bags with negative environmental impact.
It was launched officially in April 2021, after facing a devastating state due to climate change effects caused by the overuse of plastic bags in our local community of Karusi the central part of Burundi.
It collects banana trash and rice straw from local farmers, and paper waste from waste management institutions. It transforms it into eco-friendly packaging that composts within a week after its usage. It aims to limit the overuse of plastic bags, which contributes to animal deaths, climate change, and environmental deterioration.
Beyond that, it enhances the value of banana and rice plantations and provides job opportunities for unemployed youth.
