After the substantial reduction in agricultural production in the South Kivu region, fishing activities in Lake Kivu remained and/or remain unavoidable in the diet and nutrition of more than 3 million populations.
In April 2022, we conducted an investigation into the root causes of the significant decline in fish catches in Lake Kivu in three basins of Lake Kivu, including the Bukavu Basin, the Ishungu Basin and the Kalehe Basin.
1) 5.128 fishing techniques and prohibited nets have been identified in Lake Kivu, including 350 trimaran fishing units with supernets; 220 beach seine nets that use mosquito nets and supernets (Bihuro); 105 dormant nets using Tam-Tam technique and capturing immature Tilapia and 4.453 fishing nets with prohibited mono-filament gillnets (ELEKI nets, CORONA nets, gillnets n ° 6, 7 and 8).
