Nigeria is the 14th largest producer of tomatoes. Tomato is also the most important vegetable that every Nigerian family uses at least once a day. Sadly, according to FAO 2016 report, about 45% of tomato produce is lost annually which is approximately 400,000 tonnes (equivalent to $3.33bn) is lost yearly according to 2017 report by Agra innovate West Africa. We responded to this problem by producing fresh tomato paste to reduce post harvest loss by 0.01% in Kaduna state, Nigeria.
Our solution is processed tomato paste, packaged in glass jars which do not require refrigeration and can be stored on a shelve for a whole year. Because we are located in Kaduna state, Northern Nigeria, one of the regions which produce most of the tomatoes, we get tomatoes at low costs in close proximity, which we process and sell at constant affordable prices all year round. We also train other cottage processors(25 women so far) in tomato processing so that the impact of reducing PHL loss is increased.
