As of the year 2020, Malawi is still in the business of importing fruits and vegetables from South Africa and other countries. A research conducted by the Annual International Trade Statistics by Country reveals an exponential growth of imports like tomatoes between 2006 – 2017. Malawi needs to produce more tomatoes than average all year round. Greenhouse tomato farming is the only way to achieve this goal and attain the vision of reducing and ultimately abandoning the importation of tomatoes.
I am developing a greenhouse tomato farming project that will operate on one acre of community land and will accommodate world standard greenhouse equipment. Greenhouse farming is relatively new in Malawi, hence this presents itself as a golden opportunity since greenhouse farming is potentially a multi-million dollar industry in this country evident with a recent multi-million dollar investment.
