Kilimo Fresh Foods Africa is a social enterprise that leverages technology to aggregate fresh produce from smallholder farmers and deliver to its B2B customers and thousands of informal retailers in Dar es Salaam, in an effort to reduce food waste. The company sources fresh produce from smallholder farmers in rural areas and transports it to its collection center, where they are cleaned, sorted, packed, and afterward delivered to customers in Dar es Salaam using refrigerated trucks.
By streamlining the fresh produce value chain, Kilimo Fresh is able to offer stable prices to farmers and direct access to markets for their crops, while also providing its customers with an affordable supply of fresh produce for their daily needs. This problem impacts 75% of the workforce employed in Tanzania’s agricultural sector, particularly the 67% residing in rural areas.
