At FreshIQ, we began with one urgent question: Why are African supermarkets still losing so much to expired stock? In Kenya alone, expiry-related food losses in retail exceed $120M annually—worsening hunger, climate waste, and retail margins. We discovered the root cause: outdated inventory systems blind to expiry data. So, we built FreshIQ—a mobile-first, AI-powered expiry intelligence platform that tracks, predicts, and alerts store staff on perishable stock nearing expiry. During our pilot in 10 stores of a 60-store supermarket chain in Nairobi, FreshIQ slashed waste by 32%, recovered $85K in near-expiry sales, and facilitated donations of 1.5 tons of edible surplus to food banks. Now, we’re scaling across Kenya and beyond, partnering with retail chains, food banks, and donors to turn expired stock from a liability into a social asset. With climate shocks rising and food insecurity deepening, FreshIQ is not just innovation—it’s resilience. And it’s just getting started.
