Feed is the main constraint in livestock farming, contributing to over 70% of the production costs . Protein feeds, the most limiting factor in animal diets, constitute over 80% of the feed costs – greatly impacting the profitability of enterprises. Fishmeal is the key protein source in diets of poultry and fish but is also consumed by humans and other livestock. The high competition makes the product very expensive and liable to adulteration. Therefore, there is a need to substitute fishmeal with alternative protein sources like Black Soldier Fly (BSF)-larvae – in order to sustain poultry, piggery and fish production and to feed the growing population of Uganda. BSF-larvae grow on organic waste which is available at low cost in the country. The business will support the people of Uganda through providing a high-quality protein source at decent prices and through reducing the waste burden in our country.
