Awuoth women agricultural empowerment project( AWEP) is a business initiative under Awuoth widows and orphans CBO promoting solutions for improving food systems through nutritious crop production targeting African indigenous leafy vegetable value chain. The project is located in central kolwa of Kisumu East Sub county in kisumu county, Kenya and has been operational since 2005.The project also engage in community nutrition initiatives within Lake region counties of : Homabay,Siaya,Kisumu,and Migori where most of the households live in low income and children under five,lactation or pregnant women and those challenged especially the HIV /AIDs patients are vulnerable to low nutrition uptake.Micromnutrient deficiency in the region: In 1999, 89% of children under six years old and 56%of women of childbearing age had iron deficiency anemia.Awuoth is empowering 500 women farmers to produce ALVs to increase households nutrition and income to access more diverse foods for their dietary.
