The Flipflopi Project Foundation The Flipflopi originated from the idea to build the world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing boat. In 2018 on the coast of Kenya, using only local knowhow and resources, we successfully did it, sailing over 2500kms across East Africa which was the catalyst for our full systems approach. The Times (UK) reported Flipflopi triggering “Africa’s Blue Planet Moment”. The Flipflopi Project uses a systemic approach to build working replicable models for circularity of plastics in peri-urban areas that have little-to-no waste management and rapidly growing populations. We are currently pioneering the solution across the Lamu Archipelago, Kenya, through a community-centred approach, localising recycling and culturally-relevant production for income generation for the local community, building skills through vocational training, while advocating for the elimination of single-use plastics at a regional level through legislation and enabling enforcement.
