Substrate Biochar Building africa's largest biochar carbon removal company

We are setting up an industrial biochar company, with a vision to be the largest biochar carbon removal company in Africa, with a UK-based HQ. No matter how fast the world decarbonises, carbon dioxide must be removed from the atmosphere and stored permanently – up to 10Gt by 2050. We are only 0.1% to this target and biochar is the only lower cost scalable technology available today. However, whilst this market is scaling massively globally, there is no activity in Africa.

Substrate Biochar have spent the last 9 months testing, designing and confirming partnerships for a first industrial biochar facility in South Africa. The team now have agreements in place for all feedstock, biochar offtake requirements alongside a partnership with a pyrolysis technology firm. Our products will facilitate the reduction of emissions in the infrastructure sector in South Africa. Substrate is now fundraising for $950k/£750k to start the operation, with $250 committed to date.
