The latest data available in the Global Findex survey suggests that between 2011 and 2014, the number of adults with an account at a formal financial institution declined from 7.2 percent to 6.9 percent and just 0 .7 percent owning a mobile money transfer account.
Only 10 to 20% of households have access to a bank account. As for women, they are much less likely to access financial services.
Village and Community Banks (VICOBA), numbering 4,500, play an important role in improving access to financing for rural Burundians with very low incomes.
SACCO ENgodo offers a mobile application which allows VICOBAs to access training and coaching for the structuring and management of VICOBAs as well as financial inclusion, to digitize the accounting of their VICOBAs and to ensure formal savings and credits to through digital financial services.
