Globally, 16 million people under 70years of age die of non-communicable diseases with 82% of these pre-mature deaths are reported in developing countries. Diet is the biggest modifiable risk factor for chronic disease yet only 12.2% of Ugandans eat WHO’s recommended 400grams of fruit & vegetables daily (Kabwama, 2019).
This is sad considering we have a large percentage of fruit wastage in Uganda. These fruit wastes contribute to nutrient and phenolic compound loss (Singh, 2019). There is therefore an opportunity to process fruit wastes into palatable food ingredients.
Rena Beverage’s is utilizing nutrient and bio-active compound rich fruits and hibiscus calyx.
Our hibiscus products provide Iron to address Iron deficient anemia common in Uganda. Our herbal teas are rich in bio-active compounds with antioxidant properties and cholesterol lowering effects.
