RecyclePay seeks to address two pressing issues in Uganda: inadequate waste management and limited access to education and healthcare for underserved communities. According to the United Nation Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), over 600 tons of plastics are used daily in central Uganda, with 51% of these going uncollected, leading to environmental hazards. Simultaneously, many families struggle to afford their children’s education and healthcare expenses.
RecyclePay is a digital environmental card that enables underserved community members to collect plastics and earn points directly on their cards, which can later be redeemed for school fees and health care credits.
In just 8 months of operation, we have registered 46 environmental activists, set up 2 collection centers, collected 4 tons of plastic waste, and generated over 18,400 points. These efforts have already helped 19 children remain in school with a sustainable business model.
