We have set up an online marketplace for second-hand apparel in Kenya. Our platform is data-driven to help the traders to keep accurate figures with the hope that we will be able to extend them, working capital in the future.
Second-hand apparel is a global industry valued at well over $4billion dollars. 70% of which is exported to sub-Saharan African countries according to Oxfam.
In Kenya, the second-hand apparel industry supports over 2 million people with over 80% of the population wearing second-hand clothing.
Similar patterns can be observed in many other African countries. In Uganda, 86% of the population wear second-hand apparel.
The addressable market in Sub-Saharan Africa is worth billions of dollars once the whole value chain has been accounted for; though exact figures are largely unavailable.
We have had no problem whatsoever onboarding traders but we have had requests from the public telling us they also want to join to sell their quality apparel.
