97% of Malawi’s population relies on fuel sourced from trees, thus charcoal and firewood for cooking. Charcoal is thus an energy and income source of great significance on one hand, and a leading driver of deforestation and poor health on the other. Fuels attributed to 1 in 10 deaths in the country, making women the biggest victims as they spend much of their time in the kitchen preparing meals. Planet Green Africa created an innovative eco-friendly cooking fuel, a charcoal briquette that serves as an alternative cooking fuel completely independent of trees, made from recycling agricultural waste procured from women small-holder famers. Which is then marketed and sold in the communities by a network of women in kiosks on commission. When compared to charcoal and firewood burns up to three times longer and hotter, does not emit any toxic gases when burn.it is a cheaper cooking alternative targeting the low income and costs as low as half the price of charcoal to ensure access to all.
