Nature’s Nectar Socially Conscious Honey and Wax from Zambia

Nature’s Nectar aims to distribute 50,000 beehives with communities around West Lunga National Park, creating a long term income for 5,000 farmers while protecting the local forests and their biodiversity. The Nature’s Nectar program works with local beekeepers to provide sustainable alternative beehives to traditional bark beehives. Traditional bark beehives are made by stripping trees of their lower bark, killing 1 local tree for every hive, and only last 2-3 years. Kenyan Top Bar hives distributed by Nature’s Nectar protect the local forests and last at least 20 years with proper maintenance. These hives do not take from the local forests as they are made of pine produced within other areas of Zambia. They also protect the bee population as they are able to be harvested sustainably, as opposed to traditional hives. With 50,000 beehives, annual honey production will be between 350-400 metric tonnes with revenue exceeding $1,000,000 and a profit margin of 40%.
