Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a health burden in Africa. As a silent killer, it leads to 2-in-100 under-five deaths in Ghana, according to the WHO 2022 report. MUSHPLUS adds value to protein-rich but underutilized food commodities (such as oyster mushrooms) to help curb protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) among children in Ghana and also meet the rising demand for healthier food choices. Our market research and stakeholder engagement indicated that PEM is prevalent among children in both rural and urban communities in Ghana. Therefore, MUSHPLUS envisioned boosting the protein content of the most consumed foods in these two geographical areas to meet the dietary needs of these two categories of children. We produce a mushroom-soya mix (Protein-Care), which is ready-to-eat and can also be used as a protein supplement to enrich breakfast meals. We also have mushroom-fortified (Protein-Rich) instant noodles, focused but not limited to children in urban communities.
