According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted annually for consumption globally. The lack of access to markets, poor road infrastructure, and the prevalence of greedy middlemen are some of the reasons for post-harvest losses in Ghana. This situation forces farmers to live in poverty.
Merdeo aims to contribute to reducing post-harvest loss, promoting equitable farming, and improving supply chain efficiency. We accomplish this by aggregating farm produce from smallholder farmers to meet the demand of large buyers who need fresh produce. We identify farmers who have small volumes of crops that larger buyers may not accept, aggregate produce from them and others, clean, package and deliver to aggregated businesses with demand for fresh produce. Farmers are paid according to fair market prices, ensuring they receive a fair price for their goods and revenue to reinvest in farming ventures and provide for their families.
