Post Harvest Loss is a threat to food security across the world. Over 100 million Africans are facing a crisis emergency or catastrophic levels of food insecurity in 2022 and it’s expected to worsen in the future if nothing is done about it.
The main cause of post-harvest loss in Sub-Saharan Africa is an inefficient and fragmented supply chain. Smallholder farmers struggle with poor storage facilities, manipulation of middlemen who outsource from them at inconvenient prices in addition to lack of market access.
Merdeo works as a business to business marketplace for smallholder farmers and vendors.
Merdeo Foods is establishing an alternative ecosystem that seeks to drive the same result as the modernization of retail in the more developed markets, by leveraging on technology, human compassion, the commonness of mobile phones, combined with modern distribution and logistics to aggregate the demand of consumers and hence build a more efficient and resilient supply chain.
