Markit Opportunity is a for-profit, social enterprise with a mission is to improve the incomes of smallholder farmers in the East African Community by leveraging mobile technology and logistics innovations to create trusted, transparent and coordinated supply chains.

We offer a mobile platform that connects traders in urban markets to smallholder farmers within the East African Community. Traders and farmers are both subject to information asymmetry about real-time supply and demand, and market prices. Brokers in between these two actors play a significant role, where information collection is both difficult and critical in such markets. Markit Opportunity uses a holistic approach to address these market inefficiencies, necessary for impact at scale.

Our first digital solution is an SMS- and voice-based services that provides anyone with current market prices, both for the farm-gate and wholesale.

The core of our platform, and our second digital service, is an auction platform that allows farmers and traders to be matched based on crop, quantity, price and quality. The platform relies on farmers to offer high-quality produce, the most important variable to our surveyed traders.

Our third product offers logistics and transportation services for suppliers who have been matched with farmers on our platform. Full service for this product includes a quality guarantee upon delivery of produce to the urban market of their choice.

Markit Opportunity is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and operates primarily in urban markets and select farming communities within Kenya.

Our core revenue stream is to charge 1 KES per kilo to traders for matching them to ready-for-market crops. Our premium services charges 5 KES per kilo plus transportation costs to deliver high-quality crops directly from farm to buyer.

Ashley is the Founder and CEO and has worked for Silicon Valley tech startups as well as Microfinance Institutions, and holds prestigious business degrees. Kevin has a background in Supply Chain and Procurement. Winnie has years of experience with commodity trading in Kenya.

Our revenue model is to charge a transaction fee to traders for being either matched with farmers or receiving delivery of orders directly. Our pricing model charges 1 KES per kilo for matching and 5 KES per kilo (plus transportation) for delivery.
