Milled rice is Nigeria’s second most consumed food, only after Cassava in the Urban and Sorghun in rural areas; progress that rice assumed since the mid-1970s. In 2015, the Nigerian Government banned import of foreign milled rice. Initially, local giant millers had this as an advantage; swimming in unmet demands, setting prices. Their huge demand for paddy awakened smallholder farmers/ market middlemen to milling intelligence; cutting off paddy supplies, creating stiff price competitions against the industry heavyweights. A market of about 200 million consumers, growing at 2.64% per year is inspiring those challenger smallholder millers, assuring them of more promising futures. However, most of them lack the technical competence to deliver high-quality finished products, as they mostly offer poorly destonned rice. La-Wandy has engaged an economic model that aggregates milled rice from smallholder millers and finishes it to finest quality, offered to end-buyers at friendlier prices.
