Kaniya Energy The Light of Africa

There are over 500 million people (in Sub-Saharan African-including Ghana) that live without electricity/ energy. With over 3 million people in Ghana living with no access to electricity coupled with the inconsistent supply of electricity, there’s a problem of energy insufficiency.

Kaniya Energy is trying to use transformative technology to provide renewable energy sources for people living in such conditions. Our first product, Kaniya Kotoku, is a backpack (made from recycled plastics), lined with Organic Photovoltaic (OPV- organic solar cells) to provide light for at most 4 hours at night; for school-going children. This is to ensure that students have at least 1 hour extra light to study at night.

Kaniya Energy is community ran and community based. This means that we hire and train unemployed graduates (in the community) to take up the sales, marketing and assembling roles. Currently, Kaniya Energy is based in Korleman- a 5000 acre community in the Greater Accra Region.
