The COVID-19 pandemic significantly strained healthcare facilities that already faced pressure from the double burden of infectious and noninfectious diseases. The increased demand for inpatient and outpatient services left many patients unattended, revealing how unprepared our health system is in case of shocks from similar pandemics and natural disasters. Afya Guide provides the Kenyan population with a trusted alternative to the general non-specialized search engines to complement patient-provider face-to-face consultations. We are also looking to expand its scope beyond COVID-19 to cover more diseases of public health concern, such as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). We project that reducing the number of hospital visits will save money and resources for other pressing needs like education and food. Additionally, patients with life-threatening conditions will be alerted to seek medical care on time, ultimately lowering the mortality rate from prevalent diseases.
