Smallholder farmers are vital for food security, but they often struggle accessing and affording seeds for improved crop varieties. Hekhani seeds is a social enterprise based in Zimbabwe and specializing in the development of drought tolerant seeds, with biofortified nutrients for underutilized crop varieties. The overall goal of Hekhani Seeds is to provide expanded inclusive economic opportunities to smallholder farmers and other actors along viable agricultural value chains by sustainably increasing access to good quality seeds and their production, productivity thereby enhancing their food security, nutrition. Our target crops are legumes,small grains and oil seed crops. For the 2024 agricultural season, the company contracted 320 smallholder (214 were women) farmers for seed multiplication and produced a total of 800 tons for 5 crops. The company has a huge potential to transform rural livelihoods and women through increased household income from raised agricultural output.
