Seaweed processing for food increased local consumption of seaweed for healthy living and improved livelihood for women seaweed farmers in Zanzibar.Zanzibar has been farming seaweed (seamoss) and exporting in bulk since the start of the industry in 1989.There are 25,000 seaweed farmers out of which more than 80% are women. But lack of innovation and poor negotiation power is making farmers retrieve from farming. Also poor markets instability is also another major challenge that seaweed farmers face, since farmers depend solely on the price paid by the exporting companies for a kilo of dry seaweed at $0.3 – $0.5 compared to the markets of $15 – $20 per kilo.
Our business created diversity of seaweed based food like seaweed gels, salad, smoothies , spices and bakings. We champion the dissemination of health benefits of seaweed through our social medias and trainings.Lastly, the product contains 92 organic minerals out of 102 with unique minerals which are found only in the ocean.
