In Africa as at 2020, for every five young people joining the labour market, only one formal sector job is being created. In East, Central, West and South of Africa, the informal sector has created over 70% of all the new jobs in the last 5 years. Yet the sector remains highly fragmented, lacking efficient access points, with poor productivity and overall low wages for workers. It is a hard to tax area and African Governments can currently do very little to improve its functionality, a vulnerability painfully exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic where millions of daily wage earners suddenly found themselves in curfews and country wide lock downs. Yet in Africa internet penetration is growing, mobile phone ownership is high, smart phones are getting cheaper and digital literacy is on the rise. FUNDIS uses the web and mobile phone to enable informal sector workers find regular well paying jobs while homes and workplaces can find and hire competent, vetted and reliable trained professionals.
