Small-scale coffee farmers have a long and rich tradition in Nicaragua, but problems with changing weather, crop disease and low prices endanger their livelihood. Currently, there are over 40,000 coffee farmers in the northern highlands growing on less than five hectares of land. Cosecha Partners provides smallholder coffee farmers in Nicaragua with the technology, inputs and agronomic support needed to establish macadamia trees on their coffee parcels in a climate-smart, economically viable production system. We provide these services to participating farmer groups free of charge under a 20-year contract where Cosecha Partners guarantees an organic and regenerative certified, paying premium market and above Fair Trade (FTO) prices. At current prices, macadamia generates over 3 times the farm income per hectare compared to coffee ($7,500 vs. $2,000). Given the 50+ year production life of macadamia, it represents a long-term driver for sustainable livelihoods.
