Demand for content and platforms for video-on-demand (VOD) distribution have grown especially during the COVID-19 lockdown periods. However, Africa has been left behind in this boom. User-generated short-form content platforms (think Tiktok, Instagram Reels/Stories, and Twitch) have taken over by storm as traditional formats take time to create, package and are costly.
There are over 1.2B people in Africa and expected to have over 475m mobile devices connected to the internet by 2025. Majority of these users are young(21years) and the type of content they consume is 60% video.
Most of the existing platforms offer limited or no monetisation options and set high barriers to entry. A creator must have at least 1000 subscribers and over 4000 watch hours to be eligible for monetisation on YouTube, the largest video platform. This is the reason we have developed vumistream.com, a low latency live-streaming platform focused on helping African creators monetize their content.
