AGRIBIBIOCHAR is an agroecological project in Benin that produces and valorizes local biochar as an organic amendment to regenerate degraded agricultural soils in northern Benin. Faced with land impoverishment, falling yields and dependence on costly chemical inputs, small-scale producers in the Parakou region are struggling to maintain their productivity. AGRIBIBIOCHAR provides a sustainable response: transforming local agricultural residues (cotton stalks, rice husks, wood) into quality biochar via improved stoves, then distributing this biochar to family farms to improve soil fertility, water retention and carbon storage. Our model is based on three pillars: (1) local, low-carbon production, (2) technical support for farmers through participatory training sessions, and (3) structuring a viable, replicable biochar industry in rural Benin.
