The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the British Council works with governments, businesses, training and higher education institutions, international donors and civil society organisations to improve skills, encourage entrepreneurship and promote social enterprise across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Entrepreneurial Africa programme

Since 2013, the British Council has run a series of Enterprise Challenges across Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Sudan. Broadcast on TV and online, these initiatives have directly engaged 12,000 young entrepreneurs and reached a further 20 million young people.  Building on this success, our new Entrepreneurial Africa programme aims to encourage entrepreneurial skills, creativity and innovation among young Africans. It shows how, through entrepreneurship, young people can change the way they live and contribute to Africa’s socio-economic development. Entrepreneurial Africa also offers new ways for young Africans to connect with the UK to benefit both regions.
