The Blue Climate Initiative accelerates ocean-related strategies to address the climate crisis.
An Urgent Need for Climate-Focused, Ocean-Based Innovation
The health of our oceans is critical. Oceans generate an astounding one-half of the world’s oxygen and absorb one-quarter of its carbon dioxide emissions. Over 3 billion people depend on the oceans for their primary source of nutrition. The oceans’ goods and services generate about $2.5 trillion per year, equivalent to the world’s seventh largest economy. Yet these vital services are threatened by global warming, ocean acidification, pollution, unsustainable fishing practices and other threats. We need immediate concerted action.
You cannot protect the oceans without solving climate change and you cannot solve climate change without protecting the oceans.
– John Kerry | Special Presidential Envoy for Climate
Accelerating an Ocean Innovation Movement
The Blue Climate Initiative is a multi-year program engaging innovators, community leaders, scientists, investors and global experts through evidence-based action. We enable innovation, research and collaboration to combat climate change while protecting our oceans, unlocking solutions on urgent challenges like renewable energy, sustainable food supplies, improved human health, flourishing biodiversity, stewardship of the ocean’s resources, and vibrant ocean economies.
We face critical challenges for the health of our Ocean, climate and global population. Addressing them requires urgent, bold action and global cooperation. That’s why we need action-oriented, collaborative, impact-focused, and ambitious endeavors like the Blue Climate Initiative. I offer my encouragement and support for its continued success.
– H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco
