Every year, approximately 18 million kilos of undersize nuts are either discarded or left unpurchased at farm gate level for not meeting “snack kernel” grade required by most off-takers. While the snack market is well served, the growing Macadamia oil market remains underserved since the oil is often extracted from by-products of snack processing instead of “virgin” kernels. In most cases, the volume of unprocessed nuts for a single off-taker is often low, making additional sourcing, logistics and processing uneconomical.
Big Thunder Macadamia exclusively aggregates undersize nuts from smallholder
farmers for oil extraction in relatively larger volumes yielding both higher quality of pressed oils and economies of scale.
We purchase off-grade, undersize macadamia nuts from smallholder
farmers for oil extraction and use in the food and cosmetic industries.
