Cocoa pod breaking is a post-harvest activity that is still a significant challenge unaddressed over the years. According to ARPN journal (2012), 77% of cocoa farmers rely on external labor of which 75% suffer from various hazards and injuries associated with post-harvest activities. A bigger social issue we are also addressing is the over 2 million children reported to be involved in farm child labor in West Africa.
Our design is a locally fabricated mobile cocoa pod-breaking machine that automatically separates the beans from the husk and placenta thereby maximizing productivity, reducing labor cost, and on-farm hazards. We are building a better, faster, and safer way of cocoa pod breaking.
