Sorghum Pioneer Agencies For future food security

Sorghum Pioneer Agencies (SPA) is a cereal aggregating business that began operations in 2009 as a brokerage of cereals for distant buyers who needed grains from Tharaka Nithi County, and later grew into a specialized grain aggregation centre. Later, the business integrated further vertically by contracting farmers to grow and supply a range of cereals and dry pulses. Sorghum Pioneer Agencies is one of East Africa Malting’s authorized sorghum collecting agencies.

The business operates in the cereals and dry pulse value chains. Key product is sorghum and the business aggregates for other cereals produced in the county including green grams, pigeon peas, beans, cowpeas, maize and millet. SPA holds contracts with 4,500 low-income smallholder farmers to grow and supply cereals and pulses as they in exchange provide input credit, on-farm agronomic support through a network of professional service providers.
