We have developed an app called Safe Paths that is going to help in the contact tracing efforts of the government in Kenya. The app uses the Bluetooth technology and GPS in a user’s smartphone to save their location trails in real time. In the event they are in a close proximity with a positive case, the app alerts the user and they’re able to also inform other users of the app concerning their diagnosis but in an anonymous way, that way, users’ identities are protected. I have also developed a separate tool called Safe Places that is tailor made exclusively for use by public health authorities and is used by contact tracers while interviewing positive cases. Take for instance, you might not be able to remember all the places you’ve been to in the past 14 days or so, but with the Safe Paths app running, it is easy. In the short term, we are seeking to defeat this global health crisis, and in the long term, we are aiming at building resilient societies and in rebuilding the economy.
