Only 5% of the farming practice in Africa is under irrigation, with a majority of farmers (majority of whom are smallholders) depending on rain-fed practice which is facing serious challenges from the effects of climate change. Droughts are becoming frequent and severe, resulting to crop failure and food shortage. Africa has a huge agricultural potential and is home to over 2/3 of the world’s arable land but it keeps importing food worth over 50 Billion US Dollars annually. With this status quo, the livelihoods of smallholder farmers continue to be under serious threat.
Transforming the rain-fed farming for these farmers to irrigation would play a huge role in addressing the challenge, with production rising by up to 3 times in some instances. Our venture makes this possible for the smallholders to make this shift, through the provision of innovative water harvesting reservoirs, that are designed to collect and reserve ground-run off whenever it rains, for use in irrigating farms
