Kwala Chihela provides a platform for income generation for rural households through the sorghum value chain. Our support is anchored in providing a market for organic sorghum growers (in Masaiti District) in conjunction with basic entrepreneurship training, health and nutrition literacy. Kwala Chihela’s vision is to create a rural factory that will serve as a centre for sorghum value addition, grain storage, peer to peer learning and a retail sales outlet. With value addition, the aim is to increase production in sorghum therefore impacting more rural farmers. Zambia’s sorghum serviceable market stands at approximately 15,000 tonnes per annum. Kwala Chihela has the potential to obtain 6,300 tonnes of the sorghum market. On average, 1 hectare yields 1.5tonnes of sorghum grain and so 630 farmers can manage the yield in the next two years, and then increase tonnage in consecutive years.
