Our major focus is on turning arid and semi-arid lands into highly productive agricultural ventures through use of the right technologies. It is important to note that a huge proportion of Kenya’s land area is desert, arid or semi-arid lands (ASALs), accounting for over 80 per cent of its total area. ASALs are also home to about 10 million Kenyans most of whom live in abject poverty. These areas have the lowest development index and are characterised by droughts and extreme changes in weather patterns. Poor or failed rains have resulted in chronic drought in seven of the past 10 years. A recent report from The Institute of Security Studies shows that around 3.4 million Kenyans are severely food insecure while 309 000 have been internally displaced due to food insecurity and drought. Immediate action is required to mitigate the current situation from progressing.
This has escalated as a result of Covid-19, but hope lies in our timely innovative solution.
