96% of Africa relies on rain for agriculture, resulting in yields that are more than 50% lower compared to global standards. Consequently, African farmers struggle, earning only $600-$1,000 annually, and the region anticipates spending $110 billion on food imports in 2025.
The potential for climate-resilient groundwater is vast, with abundant sources available within 30 meters below ground throughout Africa. However, the lack of accessible and sustainable solutions, particularly for smallholder farmers who make up 60% of the population, hampers progress. As a result, only 4% of cultivated lands are irrigated, in stark contrast to Asia, where 37% of lands benefit from irrigation. There is a tremendous opportunity for growth, as the total irrigable area from groundwater could be expanded by 20 times across Africa and a remarkable 120 times in 13 specific African countries, encompassing 13.5 million hectares.
