Global South builds and runs solar-powered cold storage facilities for agricultural produce in sub-Saharan Africa. Working closely with smallholder farmers, we significantly improve their living conditions, eliminate post-harvest losses and reduce Africa’s dependence on food imports. Founded in early 2023, the company has started operations in Kenya in the potato value chain and is already generating regular revenue.
Today, almost all farmers are dependent on the two rainy seasons for their production which means that everyone harvests and sells at the same time. This results in an huge oversupply, leading to low prices and many crops rotting in the fields after the harvest. These post-harvest losses add up to 30 to 50 %. With the introduction of cold storage, we are able to balance out the fluctuations in supply.
Unlike other players in the sector, we fill our cold stores in close cooperation with small farmers, thus being able to scale our business quickly.
