The increasingly unpredictability of rainfall patterns across the country, has made it difficult for smallholder farmers to correctly time the planting of their crops and increases their vulnerability to unforeseen periods of drought. Given the cyclic nature of small-scale farming, a single bad season can render a farmer unable to purchase seed and fertilizer in the following year, and hence a vicious cycle of poverty ensues. Additionally, without credit, smallholder farmers are unable to purchase the equipment and tools they need to mitigate the impacts of climate change, increase yields, and
ultimately improve their income and livelihood.
We have developed Pollen, an ecosystem of information, commerce, and financial services for smallholder farmers in Africa. Our solution enabled farmers to conduct payments request and access bundled agribusiness services such as, farming inputs, crop price indexes, and weather forecasts without internet everywhere and anywhere.
