On the 15th of January 2023, a young girl named Chipego visited Monze Rural Health Centre, a health facility managed by the Catholic Church in the southern part of Zambia. Chipego, 17 years old and heavily pregnant, arrived at the center visibly unwell. Despite displaying clear symptoms of malaria, the Sister-in-charge, a Catholic nun, was unable to perform a malaria diagnosis test because they had run out of test kits. But, even if the test had been possible, the facility did not have any malaria medication. They had ordered the medicine a month prior but had not yet been delivered, leaving Chipego and her unborn child at the mercy of an unforgiving disease. Three agonizing days later, their battles came to an end – Chipego and her unborn baby died.
Every year, about 40,000 Zambians, like Chipego, and approximately 3.5 million Africans lose their lives due to the lack of access to essential medicines because of inefficient supply chains.
