Since 2017, Coliba has been at the forefront of addressing plastic waste pollution in Ghana through the set of Community Plastic Buyback Centers in coastal communities. These centers make use of recycling and repurposed 40ft shipping containers that are solar-powered and serve as a drop-off point for fishermen and coastal communities to drop off their plastic waste in exchange for incentives. Recovered plastics are later transported to Coliba MRF where it is fully recycled into new products such as flower pots. Despite the fact that Coliba collects and recycles more than 3600 metric tons of plastic each year, we cannot recycle our way out of the plastic problem.

For this reason, We launched the development of Sankofa Bags, as an alternative to virgin plastic bags. The Santofa bags are bags we are designing to be made from cassava waste starch, making the product 100% biodegradable. COliba seeks to perfect the prototype as well as raise the needed funding to scale its production.
