We started operation in 2016, because about 60% of cassava grown in South West Nigeria rots as there is insufficient buyers and processing facilities to absorb the production. We started processing fresh cassava tubers to unfortified and unpackaged cassava flakes to solve this. As we grew, we discovered from our survey that 80% of households in the region consume averagely 2kg of cassava flakes weekly but complained of poor processing, contaminants, non-packaging, and itchy eyes on consumption. Later we spotted micronutrient fortification opportunity for the product. UNICEF Nigeria reported that 2million Nigerian children under age 5 suffer from severe acute malnutrition. Only 2 out of 10 of these children get treated (UNICEF Nigeria, 2019). To solve the dual problem of post harvest losses and malnutrition, we advanced GarriVITA; a low cost, premium quality, naturally micronutrient-enriched, and packaged cassava flakes fortified with Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6 &B12, Iron, and Zinc.
