The EdTech Hub

Research and innovation to fulfil the potential of EdTech

The EdTech Hub is a consortium of partners dedicated to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: To ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. We will do this by maximizing research, innovation, and engagement related to the appropriate and effective use of education technology.

The EdTech Hub is a collaboration between the Overseas Development Institute, REAL Centre at the University of Cambridge, Results for Development, Open Development and Education, Brink, Jigsaw Consult, BRAC, Afrilabs and eLearning Africa. Donor support is currently provided by UK Aid, the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The most recent projections show we are not even close to reaching SGD4 targets. Learning poverty is a new measure introduced by the World Bank to measure the number of children who by age ten cannot read a simple text. Today, a shocking 89% of children in low-income countries fail this test. Current projections show that by 2030 under a business-as-usual scenario this rate will only fall to 43%.

This is too long to wait and – too little progress. We aim to make a difference now, at an unprecedented scale.

Through our programme of research, innovation, and engagement we will support decision-makers to make the best choices – allowing them to improve learning outcomes at scale, through the use of EdTech. We want to understand and share, how EdTech can scale and accelerate learning outcomes for the most marginalized groups. We will also consider the cost-effectiveness of EdTech in order to optimise the use of scarce resources available to support the global education crisis.
