Digitising Business Across Southern Africa
Botswana Tech Fund (BTF) is a £50 million multi-stage venture capital fund focused on backing technology and tech-enabled businesses across Southern Africa. The Fund is designed to support founders building the digital infrastructure, software, and business tools needed to accelerate the digitisation of the region’s economy.
BTF combines an accelerator-led pre-seed investment strategy with a growth-stage investment strategy targeting Seed to Series C companies.
Botswana Tech Fund exists to back founders who are digitising businesses across Southern Africa. Its mandate has two connected priorities: investing across the full technology stack of digitisation, and supporting ventures from Southern Africa’s frontier markets to scale across the region.
The Fund is particularly focused on markets including Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola and Malawi, while also supporting South African companies expanding into frontier markets and Southern African diaspora founders returning to build.
Botswana Tech Fund invests in B2B technology companies that meaningfully accelerate the digitisation of how businesses operate in Southern Africa. Priority areas include:
Payment rails and financial infrastructure
Fintech software
Insurance technology
Logistics and supply chain technology
B2B software and technology infrastructure
Digital tools that help MSMEs operate more efficiently
The Fund does not invest in businesses without a technology product at the core of their value proposition.
The Botswana Tech Fund’s pre-seed investment is structured in two tranches, with a total commitment of £100,000 per company.
The first cheque is £25,000, which admits founders into BTF’s accelerator and investment readiness programme. A second tranche of £75,000 is made available upon successful completion of the programme and achievement of agreed milestones.
For later-stage companies, The Botswana Tech Fund invests through both primary and secondary transactions. The Fund targets companies with meaningful traction in their home market and a clear opportunity to scale across Southern Africa. Investment sizes range from £250,000 to £2.5 million per transaction.
