LAN Syndicates sign-off N50M for three startups at the first Lagos StartUp Deal Day

The recent Lagos Startup Deal Day has resulted in the formation of 3 syndicates of angel investors who have invested in 3 early stage ventures. This is otherwise the largest ever aggregation of Nigerian Angel Investors (over 20) in a single (multi-venture) deal. In total 5 entrepreneurs were selected to pitch their business out of 234 applicants.

On Thursday, Lagos Angel Network (LAN) held the final pitch evening for its first Lagos StartUp DealDay event, showcasing five of the most promising startups in Lagos. A total of N50 million has been committed to three selected ventures by three DealDay syndicates.

LAN received nearly 234 applications for the program. Screened by the participating investors the list was brought down to an initial shortlist of ten companies, that after further diligence produced a shortlist of five ventures. These companies were invited to the final pitch round, where the founders made their final presentations in front of a closed panel of LAN members, Deal Day judges and syndicate participants. Three investments are now in deal closing and will be announced in due course.

The LAN members share the intention to invest N100 million over the course of 2016. The aim is to make it easier for angel investors to invest in Nigeria’s most promising startups. At the same time, the LAN members create a platform that allows investors from around the world to get involved as well. This is some of the first syndication work being done on the continent and the Quarterly Deal Days are run in partnership with the online community VC4Africa and ABAN (the Africa Business Angels Network). A network of hubs, incubators and accelerators are able to promote their companies to any of the Deal Days as they position their startups to scale.

How to get involved?

The next StartUp DealDay will be held on June 30th, 2016 and the application process will open soon via VC4Africa.

At the same time, investors keen to get in on the action, are encouraged to join one of the syndicates. In this case, please contact the LAN Secretariat by email at secretariat@lagosangelnetwork.net for information on how to register.
