VC4Africa community celebrates 1000 published SME companies from across Africa!

This week we published the 1000th venture profile on VC4Africa! Check our ventures map, see some numbers on countries & sectors below, and read at the bottom how to join Africa’s venture capital platform too!

VC4Africa is the largest online community connecting Africa’s most promising SME entrepreneurs with qualified investors and various resources. Today there are 15,000 entrepreneurs, mentors, investors and business professionals part of the VC4Africa community spread across 159 countries, including more than 600 Angels and early stage VC investors.

To date VC4Africa has processed more than 1,800 venture applications from entrepreneurs all across Africa, of which 1,000 venture profiles were published to the VC4Africa.biz website. VC4Africa publishes ventures that are disruptive in their business model, are scalable and offer innovative solutions. Most ventures on VC4Africa are early stage and require investments between USD $10K and USD $1 million. Combined, 70 ventures on VC4Africa reported being able to successfully secure USD $12 million in funding. On average, startups secured USD $80,000 in funding vs. expansion companies that secured USD $237,000.

Countries

Kenya (222), Nigeria (187) & South Africa (131) take a big chunk of the 1000 companies published on VC4Africa. Fourth, fifth and sixth base countries are Ghana (86), Cameroon (67) & Uganda (54), followed by Egypt (45) & Tanzania (32). Other countries represented include Senegal, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Congo, DRC, Namibia, Benin, Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, CAR, Chad, Gambia, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Burundi, Liberia, Togo, Guinea, Mauritius, Somalia, Sudan, Tunesia & Zanzibar.

There are also still a few countries with no published venture profiles on VC4Africa. If you are in one of these countries you now have an opportunity to become the first entrepreneur publishing their venture from there! These countries are Cape Verde, Djibouti, Equitorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Libia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Reunion, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, South Sudan & Swaziland.

When looking at sectors, the top categories of the 1000 SME companies registered on VC4Africa are Internet (428 companies), Computer Software (311) & Mobile (285). Next are Media (174), Telecommunications (152), Agribusiness (150) & Retail (145), followed by Financial Services (121), Computer Hardware (117) & Banking (112). Other sectors include Diversified Services, Leisure, Consumer Durables and Non-Durables, Electronics, Health Services, Manufacturing, Construction, Food and Beverages, Automotive, Real-Estate, Transportation, Renewable Energy & Import-Export. In the chart below the “Other” category includes Specialty Retail, Wholesale, E-Commerce, Utilities, Education, Insurance, Waste, Clean Technology & Water and Sanitation.

It should be noted that ventures on VC4Africa can be included in more than one sector.
