End of the week of Mobile Web East Africa 2013. In the spotlight: Anne Shongwe of Afroes

Yesterday a new mobile game for peace was launched at Mobile Web East Africa 2013 by Anne Shongwe, founder & CEO of mobile game developing company Afroes. We end the week with a link to the inspiring TEDX talk Anne Shongwe held earlier at TEDxSoweto.

This week was the week of Mobile Web East Africa 2013 (MWEA2013). On Monday we interviewed TMS Ruge on the threshold of the event. On twitter we covered pieces of MWEA2013. We interviewed MPrep’s Toni Maraviglia, who was also present at MWEA2013.

Yesterday we featured a list of 7 amazing gaming & animation companies in Africa on VC4Africa. Yesterday mobile game developing company Afroes also launched a new mobile game for peace at Mobile Web East Africa 2013: “Haki: Chaguo Ni Lako” or “Justice: The Choice is Yours” is a mobile phone game that they have designed in conjunction with the Tuvuke Initiative for Peace, to inspire commitment to peace and tolerance amongst young Kenyans who play the game, ahead of the Kenyan elections.

Anne Shongwe, founder & CEO of Afroes, is also on the list of 2013 global social entrepreneurs that was announced this week by the Schwab Foundation, affiliated to the World Economic Forum. Her company Afroes  is a social enterprise based in South Africa and Kenya that aims to unlock the leadership, citizenship and entrepreneurial potential of millions of young Africans through mobile game-based learning.

We end the week with a link to the inspiring TEDx talk Anne Shongwe held earlier, at TEDxSoweto, about ‘Mobile games that change culture’. How can we create a movement to re-imagine Africa? And can examples from the gaming industry serve as inspiration for other industries? Please share your reactions in the comments below!
